I have been working on a bait to overcome some of the problems in the ones that are mass marketed. First, I wanted a little more weight than was available. Second, I wanted a better hook. Third, I wanted to eliminate the problem of the blade cutting the fisherman’s line when a big fish turned away from the fisherman. Through some discussions I had, it seems the problem with the line getting cut is more common than I had thought—especially when big fish are involved. Adding a short wire leader seemed to be the solution. I have tested the bait extensively and believe the leader is a great insurance policy. It also doesn’t hamper the action of the bait, and I don’t think it spooks fish (no more than a big silver blade would anyway.) If you don’t like the leader, you can simply cut it off of the snap.
